powered with a NiTi Leaf Spring

with a nickle titanium Leaf spring, this expander has a very predictable & continuous controlled expansion while also providing your patient's a pain-free, hands off experience.

no more worrying about compliance

the NiTi powered leaf does the work for your patient and their parents. No more worrying about compliance and no more worrying period.

When the leaf springs are compressed, they push outward continuously with a force of only 450 grams or 900 grams (depending on your chosen leaf expander).

This is significantly more gentle when compared to a traditional RPE's 4500 grams of force. That is almost 10 lbs of force* applied to your patient's teeth.

Check out the study below on maxillary pain during expansion treatment; Leaf Expander vs Hyrax Expander:* Ugolini A., Cossellu G., Farronato M., Silvestrini-Biavati A., A multicenter, prospective, randomized trial of pain and discomfort during maxillary expansion: Leaf expander versus Hyrax expander

And due to the continuous expanding nature of the leaf spring, treatment time will be about the same as a traditional RPE.

Give your patients and their parents a pain-free experience while also giving you 50% reduced chair time per expansion treatment (when compared to traditional RPEs).

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for the Leaf Expander to complete expansion?

The Leaf Expander will take about 6 months to complete expansion. There are two variants of the Leaf Expander that dictates maximum expansion: 6mm and 9mm. Each one has two different force of expansion: 450 grams and 900 grams.

Your chosen combination of maximum expansion and grams of force will affect the total time it takes to expand.

What does the 6 or 9 mean on my Leaf Expander?

The "6" or "9" symbol on your Leaf Expander dictates the total amount of expansion that will be made once the treatment is complete.

We recommend 6mm for adolescent patients and 9mm for adult patients or mixed dentition patients.

What does the 450 or 900 mean on my Leaf Expander?

The "450" or "900" symbol dictates the grams of continuous force that will be applied when the Leaf Spring is activated.

450 grams is equivalent to < 0.1 lbs of force and the 900 grams is equivalent to < 1.9 lbs of force.

Can the Leaf Expander be made with 3D Bands?

Our Leaf Expanders can be fitted with our 3D Bands (SLS printed bands). Make your appointment time easier for you and your patient. Forget about ever needing to place spacers and save you and your patients a lot of time.

Simply give us an intraoral scan and we'll deliver you your Leaf Expander with 3D Bands.

For more info on 3D Bands, check out our PDF below:
All About The 3D Bands.pdf

What is the screw made of?

The expander is made of stainless steel, while the leaf springs themselves are made up of NiTi (Nickle-Titanium).

If you decide to get the Leaf Expander with our 3D Bands, the framework is made of CoCr (Cobalt-Chrome)

What if I want to be completely hands off?

Ask us about the Leaf Self-Expander! The Leaf Self-Expander has the same two variations of total expansion: 6mm and 9m, and the same variations of grams of force: 450 grams and 900 grams.

Choose the combination you need and watch as the Leaf Self-Expander does all the work for you and your patient without any need for reactivation appointments.

Is the Leaf Expander painful?

A study showed that <10% of patients that had the Leaf Expander felt strong pain for the first 2 days after activation compared to >50% of patients feeling severe pain from a traditional Hyrax expander with 25.2% patients needing to use analgesics for their pain.
